President Donald Trump has hit on a single dark formula to milk cash out of his supporters, former deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes argued to MS NOW’s Nicolle Wallace on Thursday’s edition of “Deadline: White House.”
Specifically, he said, Trump is counting on the very traits that draw people to him to also make them easy marks for scams.
“We read all of David Fahrenthold’s reporting in the first term and believed it. He was stealing from the government,” said Wallace. “The people that voted for him a second and third time either didn’t believe it or didn’t care.” And yet now, with projects like his cryptocurrency offerings, “he is stealing from them … and the fact that he can’t even pretend to respect his voters is, to me, just an epic political story.”
Rhodes agreed fully with Wallace.
“Some of it is that they don’t follow the same information we do, but some of it is that he knows that they’re the ones who will be the suckers, right?” said Rhodes. “We’re not going to buy a trump meme coin. The people that will buy Trump Steaks are the same people that will buy Trump crypto venture, right?”
In other words, said Rhodes, “he counts on the people who are the most blindly loyal to him being the people who are the easiest for him to take advantage of. And that’s a really dark truth, but it is a truth of American politics and Trump family corruption. The people that they need to take advantage of are the people that most believe in them.”
Meanwhile, said Rhodes, the simple fact remains that anyone who “thinks that they’re going to benefit by getting close to Trump always ends up losing in the end” — and that doesn’t just apply to his voters, but to the very crypto industry he’s currently unleashing.
From their perspective, said Rhodes, “he’s coming along and kind of a quid pro quo. We’ll give his campaign a lot of money and we’ll get some votes for him, and he’ll deregulate our industry and he’ll make sure that, you know, the securities and exchange commission, you know, drops all crypto investigations as it did. But the reality is that’s not good for that industry either, because he’s made it such a corrupt, deregulated Wild West that it has become the worst version of itself. And that is both discrediting crypto in general, and that’s going to compel regulation in the future.” AI, he added, could be going the same way.
“So … he’s not only screwing over his own voters. He’s actually like a danger to the very people who thought that what they were kind of purchasing with their support for him was this deregulatory embrace,” said Rhodes.
