Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) landed in a humiliating national spotlight Tuesday after falsely accusing former special counsel Jack Smith of lying about attending an Atlanta Hawks game, when he was actually at an Iowa Hawkeyes away game in Maryland.
But even more embarrassing, MS NOW’s Jen Psaki noted that evening, is that he clearly had press talking points handed out to MAGA pundits, who ran with his talking points before even validating if they were true.
“Let me just put on my hat again and tell you that sometimes when a politician thinks they’re going to have a big moment, they give a little heads-up to friendly media outlets that something big is coming,” said Psaki. “Sure enough, right as Senator Schmitt finished grilling Jack Smith, all sorts of MAGA media influencers had already seized on it. And either they didn’t watch the hearing at all, or they are so redpilled they didn’t see what everyone else watching saw happen.”
For example, she said, Fox’s Sean Hannity posted that Schmitt “put Jack Smith on the spot.” “What hearing were you watching?” she asked. Meanwhile, far-right podcaster Benny Johnson wrote Schmitt “just caught Jack Smith perjuring himself on the stand in his testimony,” and didn’t even spell Schmitt’s name correctly.
“Now, other MAGA influencers also piled on,” said Psaki. “And guess what? Almost all of them have since deleted their posts praising Senator Schmitt for what was supposed to be this big gotcha moment.”
But there’s even more, Psaki noted, because as the hearing started, The Charlie Kirk Show released a pre-recorded interview in which Schmitt was praised by the host for doing “a great job” and noting “you had text messages from his team confirming that he was going to a Hawks game, and he sat there acting dumbfounded and completely clueless,” to which Schmitt replied it was “the only NBA or NCAA men’s game going on at that time in Atlanta.”
“Just sit with that for a second, because I have been sitting with it for a while,” said Psaki. “The Republican Party has spent the last three years claiming to be the ultimate defenders of women’s sports. It’s the number one issue, says a lot of them.” And yet, Psaki added, Schmitt didn’t even bother to check whether any women’s games were going on that Smith might have attended.
