President Donald Trump said Tuesday that increasingly unpopular data centers will make communities “very, very happy” — and critics online quickly mocked the prediction as “out of touch.”
Trump made the remarks following a White House summit with some of the country’s most high-profile tech leaders, where he said companies are “going to work with local communities” and “make the community happy.”
“You’re going to see data centers are going to be very popular,” Trump predicted. “They’re going to make communities very, very, happy.”
Trump also claimed areas with data centers “have become very rich.”
“People have become very rich,” Trump said. “Their taxes have gone down, not up.”
“There are so many people that want data centers,” he added.
Online, critics weren’t so sure.
“Hello, America,” DNC communications director Daniela Campos Lopez wrote on social media. “Is President Trump out of touch?”
“Where?” Artist Eric Lindquist asked his X followers. “How is he so out of touch?”
David R. Brockman, a professor and scholar at the Baker Institute’s Religion and Public Policy Program, offered the president a blunt response in a Bluesky post: “Try living next to one.”
Another user accused Trump of “straight up lying,” while another user on X, HawaiiDelilah, responded: “Is he insane? Never mind…”
The reactions come as data centers emerge as a top political issue ahead of the midterm elections. A recent New York Times/Siena poll found 61% of likely voters oppose their construction.
“These dem campaign ads are getting better every day,” Thomas Long, a volunteer organizer, wrote on Bluesky.
