Dennis Haskins, the actor best known for his role as Principal Richard Belding in “Saved by the Bell,” has died. He was 75.
“Everyone loved Mr. Belding, and those of us who got to know Dennis loved him even more,” his agent Jay Schachter said in a statement Tuesday, adding that the actor “absolutely LOVED his fans.” He did not provide a cause or date of death.
Born in Tennessee, Mr. Haskins worked as a music manager and wrote plays, according to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, which he attended. He appeared in episodes of numerous popular 1980s TV shows including “The Twilight Zone” and “Magnum, P.I.”
But he shot to fame as Mr. Belding in “Saved by the Bell,” a sitcom about a group of friends at a California high school that ran from 1989 to 1992 and placed him as both a nemesis and a mentor to the show’s protagonist, Zack Morris.
He reprised the role in spin-offs including “Saved by the Bell: The College Years” and “Saved by the Bell: The New Class.”
