A hot mic caught President Donald Trump muttering that he’d like to go home during the U.S. team’s Presidents Cup victory celebration on Sunday — as the players around him promptly walked away.
Trump, 80, attended the final round of the tournament at Medinah Country Club outside Chicago, where the American squad rallied from a three-point deficit in Sunday singles to beat the International team 17-13. He posed with the trophy afterward and could be heard speaking to the players, though crowd noise and music drowned out much of the exchange, The Daily Beast reported.
After shaking hands with U.S. captain Brandt Snedeker, Trump appeared to tell him, “You’re going to go down in history,” according to the outlet. He then turned away and seemed to say, “I’d like to go home” — at which point the players stepped away from him. A song by anti-Trump singer Pink began playing over the speakers, cutting off any further audio.
Critics zeroed in on the slip. The account Donk Media posted the video with the jab, “If this was Joe Biden it would be on a loop already on Fox News.”
The awkward moment capped a day of mixed receptions for the president. Trump had earlier taken the microphone at the first tee after being introduced by PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp, telling the crowd, “You know the fake news media will say I got a very bad reception.”
He added that Rolapp had asked him for a short speech but he didn’t have “the courage” to give one, quipping, “These people want to see golf. They don’t want to hear speeches.”
During the remarks, a heckler could be heard shouting a profane pedophilia accusation at the president.
Hundreds of protesters lined the streets outside the club as Trump arrived, prompting heightened security and skirmishes with Trump supporters that required police to separate the groups.
“He’s not welcome,” protester Allison Galvan told ABC7 Chicago. “We are wanting to send that message loud and clear.”
Trump arrived back at the White House just after 9:30 p.m., calling it a “tremendous day” and again congratulating Snedeker before declining to take questions.
