Colorado gubernatorial candidate Victor Marx is adopting an unusual strategy to win the election: rather than persuade voters, simply hold a mass fasting and prayer until God forces his opponents to vote for him.
According to Kyle Clark of 9 News, Marx “is calling for 21 days of fasting to cause a shift in ‘ideologies’ before Election Day,” claiming that the election “will all be determined by prayer,” and is “a spiritual battle against the forces of wickedness.”
Marx, a far-right candidate, has become embroiled in a long string of controversies.
He has previously claimed, but not provided any evidence, that he was forced to commit a murder as a child, and that he has literally fought with demons and supernatural creatures as part of his missionary work. He has also operated his campaign merchandise store through a shell company to try to get around campaign finance law, which experts have said is illegal.
The controversy has been so great that some Republican Party officials in Colorado have stepped down rather than back his campaign.
Marx is not the first Republican candidate to try to pray his way to victory. Doug Mastriano attempted a similar strategy in his gubernatorial campaign in Pennsylvania in 2022, with his “40 days of fasting and prayer” in the leadup to Election Day. Mastriano also prayed for MAGA to “seize the power” in a recorded call to action right before January 6.
