Global leaders are in New York for the opening of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, at a time when many countries are feeling the impact of instability in the Middle East, including the U.S. war with Iran and Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.
The annual meeting, known as the general debate, is set to run until next Monday. Tuesday’s opening session is expected to attract particular attention as President Donald Trump will be one of several leaders to speak, along with those from Brazil, Jordan, Qatar and France.
The theme of this year’s debate is “Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for all.”
U.N. Secretary General António Guterres said in a statement, “In a world marked by turbulence, division and uncertainty, the United Nations is more necessary than ever.”
On Tuesday, Trump is expected to sign a deal with Danish and Greenlandic leaders outlining security arrangements for Greenland, and to meet world leaders including U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, members of the Gulf Cooperation Council and Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez.
