Last week at the Emmy Awards, Taylor Swift sent her fandom into a frenzy with a strange string of words: “Saccharide. Aries. From the vineyard. North or south.”
Swift uttered the phrases during a pretaped sketch with host Mariska Hargitay, as they poked fun at the extreme measures that Swifties take to decode any clue about the pop superstar’s next move.
The commentary was especially meta, as her fans have spent the last week obsessively parsing what it could mean. Then speculation really ramped up Tuesday morning when Swift replaced the letter “o” with the number zero in her social media bios — and even more so when a mysterious countdown appeared on her website leading to 2 p.m. Eastern.
Was it a new album? A tour? A deluxe version of “Life of a Showgirl”? Finally, the “Reputation” vault tracks? Some sort of celebration for the 20th anniversary of her debut album, coming up next month? She couldn’t possibly be releasing images from her wedding, could she?
The end result? It’s … a new single, “Patient Zero,” which will drop Friday, Swift confirmed; she’s offering three collector’s edition CDs. Sorry — you’re still not seeing those wedding photos.
