President Donald Trump’s administration sparked fury Tuesday after it moved to revoke health care coverage for 750,000 Americans.
Vice President JD Vance announced the move during remarks carried by CSPAN, claiming that the people who lost their health insurance had purchased it fraudulently. Vance claimed that the government is investigating whether the people who lost health insurance are American citizens and whether they meet the income requirements to qualify for the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare.
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz also announced that there will be a six-month moratorium on new ACA brokerage sign-ups. He added that more than a million Americans could be kicked off of the program because they “never filed a claim.”
The moves were swiftly panned by political analysts and observers, who shared their reactions on social media.
“They are kicking people off their healthcare for being healthy. Many people are perfectly healthy…until they aren’t. This is stupid and evil,” Fred Wellman, a Democratic candidate in Missouri, posted on X.
“Wait, it’s now ‘fraud’ to pay for health insurance that you don’t use? Huh?” Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, an immigration attorney, posted on X.
“Health insurance is supposed to protect you in case you get sick. Filing zero claims is not proof you never needed coverage. Republicans are the most evil people around,” Alex Cole, a liberal news influencer, posted on X.
“S—. Will I get kicked off of my life insurance for not filing a claim? These absolute monsters want people to be sick,” Rob Davidson, executive director of The Committee to Protect Healthcare, posted on X.
