Conservative former federal Judge Michael Luttig had a blunt assessment of President Donald Trump’s political situation, speaking to MS NOW’s Nicolle Wallace on Monday.
Trump is near the end of the road, he said — but all the more dangerous for it.
“Let me come back to you on the blunt picture you paint about where we are right now,” said Wallace. “Do you see any rejection seismic enough of the Republicans and of Trump and of Vance, and of the economy and of gas prices, that pushes them back and lets us save our country in the next few years?”
Luttig, a founding scholar of the conservative legal movement who became outspoken against Trump around the time of the plot to seize the 2020 presidential election, confirmed that he does.
“We all knew that this day would come,” he said. At the moment, he said, “the walls are closing in on Donald Trump … he is feeling trapped. And it’s like a wild animal that’s trapped. Now he is desperate today, this week. And he will be desperate between now and the midterm elections and then the certification of the new Congress in January. Desperate like a trapped animal.”
He cannot escape this, Luttig continued, because “he’s being entrapped by America itself and all that America has always been. America has been the envy of the world and the beacon of freedom and liberty to the world for 250 years until Donald Trump assumed the presidency. And America is no longer that at all.”
But now, he added, “America is slowly fighting back. The walls are closing in on him, and he is desperate at this point. That should worry all of us. And it should worry the world.”
