“The Graduate” is now trying to seduce Mrs. Robinson — not the other way around.
All my girlfriends, in their 60s, are getting hit on by younger men who are borderline feverish.
It’s becoming a feature of the online dating scene in West LA.
Comments on the dating app Hinge, for instance, include: “I have to have you in my life!”
Are they looking for a mom? Hot for teacher? Bragging rights?
But what if we’re too tired to teach new dogs old tricks?
Age-gap relationships usually go the other way; older men traditionally tend to go for significantly younger women.
Not anymore.
I’m seriously flattered by the hearthrob young male’s attention — though not convinced.
These young hotties really know how to stroke your ego and perhaps cause you to consider such offers as this one: “You are legit so ethereal and stunning that I choked on my drink and wrecked my shirt. So since you owe me one, why don’t you come out and see me at one of my USC games?”
Well, I don’t know. Maybe because I don’t want to run into your (likely younger) mother!
So why is this happening? I got curious and boldly inquired of these new kids on the block why they are even interested in women our age.
Navid says, “Attractive older women are the best-kept secret.”
While Adrian adds older women “have always been more direct and intentional with their desires and play fewer games. They are more interested in health and fitness, more intellectually interesting and less interested in superficial pursuits as our peers.”
Mike says, “I think younger men are realizing that attraction isn’t always about chasing youth. Sometimes the woman who gets inside your head is the one you end up wanting closest to your body.”
Wow, Mike, sounds deep. That is one mature 31 year old — am I right, ladies?
Sadly, he’s still closer to my kid’s age than mine.
But some of my older friends have been ecstatic at their youthful paramours: My girl Kittie in New York, also 64, recently had a spicy hot fling with a gentleman in her business. (He’s 38.) Her spark and glow were luminous.
She says, “They are far more enthusiastic and experimental in bed, much more eager to please and definitely more physically appealing most times.”
Kittie adds: “They provide a feeling of being young again.”
As for the cons, Kittie says her hard-bodied boyfriend suffers from a lack of “emotional maturity” and is “not as financially stable,” so he’s not as great an option to plan a future with.
Alas.
Then there’s my fabulous gal pal Ruby, for whom I have mad respect, who is now in Miami.
She cited her pros of dating younger: “Looks, experimental, open-minded, energetic, curious, love nightlife, have new ideas, they worship you and arrive with less baggage.” Her cons: “Inexperienced, immature, lack of sophistication, still eyeballing younger women, less money, naive, unaware and unsettled.”
She is now 83, but at the age of 60, she unapologetically dated a 27 year old — long-term!
Even after all I learned, I couldn’t understand why young men would want to be with our, ahem, older bodies. As Ruby told me then, “They don’t care about our insecurities. They often just want a warm, cool woman who is fun!”
All the same; dating your own age has supreme advantages. It’s nice to share the art, music, film and cultural references of your own time.
And for a senior lady, dating a young man doesn’t always mesh with the social circles of her peers. Classic celebrity crushes like Ryan Gosling, Mark Wahlberg, Jason Bateman and Brad Pitt have all aged like fine wines.
But, despite being a better match on paper, the well-kept successful men of advanced age are naturally in high demand. Most of them are no longer on the market. So we return, inexorably, to Adonis.
More research revealed a striking fact: An Australian study determined that both men and women initially reported greater marital satisfaction when they had younger spouses.
Perhaps this Year of the Cougar is evening things out, after all.
