CNN’s Jake Tapper flagged what President Donald Trump said Friday when pressed on what he actually wants from his decision to bar three news organizations from the White House, noting the president pivoted immediately to money he says networks have paid him.
Asked about the specifics of the ban, Trump said the outlets could return if they corrected course, then turned to legal settlements.
“If they could send themselves out, I’d love it. Look, they’re very dishonest people. They write in a very dishonest way,” he said. “ABC fake news gave me $16 million. That was agreed to. $16 million that I won from ABC News because George [Stephanopoulos]. CBS gave me $38 million because they broadcast Kamala Harris on 60 Minutes and the questions bore no relationship to what she said.”
Tapper caught the discrepancy on air, saying the CBS figure was news to him and that he didn’t believe the network had paid that much. ABC agreed to pay $15 million toward Trump’s presidential library to settle a defamation suit over remarks by anchor George Stephanopoulos, whose name Trump mangled Friday. Paramount settled the “60 Minutes” suit for $16 million in July 2025, also directed to the library and without any apology. Trump has separately claimed an additional $20 million from incoming owner Skydance in advertising or programming, a figure never confirmed as part of the settlement.
Tapper called the sequence “telling” and put the question to his panel directly, asking whether Trump’s idea of an outlet straightening itself out amounts to paying him.
CNN special correspondent Jamie Gangel said that fit a pattern for Trump.
“Well, that is normal for Donald Trump,” she said. “There is a history of that’s what he wants.”
She pushed back on the premise of the ban itself.
“It shouldn’t need to be said, but CNN is not fake news. We report the facts to the best of our ability,” she said. “What you saw here today is that Donald Trump doesn’t like the facts.”
Gangel argued the underlying issue is control. Trump cannot control the press, she said, and extracting money is the closest available substitute. She predicted some stories may have “triggered” the president’s eruption.
Earlier in the segment, Gangel had described the ban as a break from how presidents normally handle press frustration.
“This is not normal. This was a temper tantrum,” she said. “And it is what dictators and authoritarian leaders try to do.”
She pointed to the conditions around Trump as context, citing his approval rating at 35%, the war with Iran and midterm elections in which Republican candidates could lose. Though Trump said there was no particular reason for the ban beyond accumulated frustration, Gangel said she suspected something specific may have set him off.
Gabe Rottman of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press said the case is stronger than previous fights over press access precisely because of how Trump explained himself.
The president is excluding news organizations explicitly because of coverage he dislikes, Rottman said, and while the White House is not obligated to open itself to journalists at all, once it does it cannot exclude them over what they publish. The organization’s president, Bruce D. Brown, called the ban “flatly unconstitutional” and textbook viewpoint discrimination in a statement Friday.
Tapper pointed to another Trump remark from the day as the sort of thing an attorney would simply hand a judge.
“There’s something wrong with a country that can allow people to write purposely negative stories,” Trump said.
Rottman argued an adversarial and independent press serves the government as well as the public.
