‘Worst I’ve ever seen’: Swing-state GOP campaign in crisis as volunteers fail to show up

A local Republican official working on Mike Rogers’ Michigan Senate campaign publicly sounded the alarm this week over collapsing GOP enthusiasm on the ground.

Jackson Karki, a Northern Michigan University freshman who chairs at least four counties for Rogers’ Senate bid, vented from his anonymous X account, “Red Lion Politics,” confirmed by a source familiar with his identity.

“The vibes on the ground are the worst I’ve seen in my life. No one wants to promote candidates, no one wants to knock doors, no one wants to do (expletive). Attendance for any right wing event is at all time lows anywhere I go,” Karki wrote. “And as someone that has knock doors the energy of the people answering the doors is terrible as well.”

The post was flagged by politics reporter Jake Lahut on his Substack.

Karki’s post struck a chord with other conservative-leaning accounts, several of whom blamed the ongoing war with Iran for souring the mood among Trump’s base. One reply argued the conflict has left many previously loyal Trump supporters disillusioned and confused, a sentiment Karki enthusiastically agreed with.

The complaints reveal a deeper rift too. Karki has separately criticized Israel in his posts, stating that “I’m afraid Israel controls us” and “All Israel does is cause problems,” even while insisting he’d never side with Palestine either.

That tension points to a broader generational split emerging inside the GOP over unconditional support for Israel, a split that could complicate Rogers’ campaign given how heavily it has leaned into pro-Israel messaging and attempted to court Jewish Democrats who might be uneasy with the anti-Israel stances of Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed.

Pressed by another user who dismissed him as overly pessimistic, Karki — who nonetheless remains optimistic the GOP can win Michigan in the fall — doubled down on his credibility to speak on the matter.

“I’m a county Republican chairman lol,” Karki wrote, “this is the reality of the situation.”
