President Trump indicated that he will not offer Lindsay Clancy a presidential pardon after the killer mom’s murder trial dramatically ended with a hung jury.
The commander-in-chief implied that he’s unable to intervene since the high-profile case that gripped the nation for weeks is “actually a state situation, not a federal” one.
“It’s a very sad situation,” Trump told reporters Sunday. “I certainly heard that, but look, it’s very sad. There is no winner there. There’s no win no matter what you do. Three children are dead.”
Clancy’s defense lawyer Kevin Reddington appealed to the president on “Good Morning America” last week when asked what was next for the mom after the mistrial.
“Mr. President, I would hope that you would consider this young lady – the type of person she is and what she’s been through – and consider a pardon,” Reddington, 75, said.
Reddington later appeared on CBS Bostonand again asked the president for a pardon — however, he noted Trump did not have the legal authority to grant the request as Clancy is only facing state charges, which presidents have no power to pardon.
Trump, however, could throw some influence on what happens next as prosecutors weigh whether to retry her for the murder of her three young children, he said.
“If President Trump feels that this is a case that warrants that type of intervention from the executive branch, if you will — even though, legally, it’s not a federal case — he certainly has an awful lot of clout,” he said.
“I think any type of help that we can get is helpful.”
Trump added in his comments that he’s heard Reddington is a “very good attorney.”
“I hope they can work something out,” he said. “That’s something they have to work out.”
Clancy, 36, strangled her three children in their Massachusetts home in 2023, but her defense argued she suffered from severe postpartum psychosis when she killed the kids.
The mom wasn’t convicted after a sole holdout juror refused to find her not guilty by reason of insanity.
If she is tried again and found not guilty by reason of insanity, she will spend years in a state-run hospital.
