Does Ozempic Really Make You Lose Your Hair? Here’s What New Research Suggests.

No matter the scientific and medical advancements we make, it’s nearly impossible to create something wondrous and revolutionary without a trade-off. GLP-1 weight-loss drugs seem miraculous, helping people shed substantial amounts of weight relatively quickly and safely. But they may come with a side effect of speeding up hair loss.

According to a study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, a potential genetic connection exists between the GLP-1 pathway targeted by drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy and male pattern baldness.

Scientists Found a Possible Link Between GLP-1 Drugs and Male Pattern Baldness

Researchers at NYU analyzed genetic data from more than 205,327 people and found that men with androgenetic alopecia were 7 percent more likely to carry variants associated with higher GLP1R expression. That doesn’t mean taking a GLP-1 drug gives you a 7 percent chance of becoming bald. The researchers didn’t actually follow people taking the medications, so the study didn’t prove the drugs cause hair loss.

But there is a pretty simple explanation for why some people taking GLP-1’s can sometimes shed hair. Rapid weight loss can shock the body into pushing more hair follicles into a resting phase, causing a temporary shedding known as telogen effluvium. Thankfully, it’s not permanent, and the hair typically grows back after the body adjusts.

This new research suggests that there could be another mechanism at play for some GLP-1 users, particularly men already genetically predisposed to male pattern baldness. In those cases, GLP-1 drugs might potentially accelerate the process that had been waiting in the wings.

None of this means that taking GLP-1’s means one day you’ll wake up looking like Captain Picard, but the observed effect was modest, and researchers think it’s enough to warrant further research.

The finding doesn’t mean everyone taking a GLP-1 will wake up one morning looking like a billiard ball. The effect observed was modest; its clinical importance remains uncertain, and researchers say more work is needed.

Still, the discovery adds an amusingly cruel possibility to the GLP-1 revolution: You could finally lose the weight you’ve spent years trying to lose, only to discover that your hair has decided it would rather keep the old body.
