Vice President JD Vance took the biggest speaking slot of the Republican Party’s midterm convention Thursday night, delivering a keynote that was widely read as an early tryout for a 2028 presidential run – but then Donald Trump took the microphone, and he didn’t let go of it, according to a new political analysis.
The 42-year-old Vance delivered a speech heavy on personal appeals to faith and pointed jabs at the Democratic Party’s “crazies,” and some Republicans in broke into chants of “48” — a nod to the number of the president Vance may one day become, but then the 80-year-old president stomped all over that audition in his second lengthy speech of the convention, reported CNN.
“It was a jarring end to the GOP’s unusual two-day midterm convention in Dallas,” wrote Eric Bradner, “which came less than two months before Americans will decide whether the party will retain its House and Senate majorities or hand Democrats power for the last two years of Trump’s term.”
For more than 25 minutes, the president held forth on subjects far afield from the midterm message Vance had just delivered, praising his favorite opera singers and mocking the appearance of Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton, wrote Brander.
It was largely a rerun of the rollicking, freewheeling speech Trump had delivered the night before — on the convention’s opening night — leaving Vance’s carefully constructed pitch to swing voters overshadowed by his boss’s improvisational sequel, the CNN reporter argued.
At one point, Trump led the crowd through an extended pledge to vote in November, telling supporters he didn’t care whether they were “registered or not” and urging them to “try and cheat like hell, like they (Democrats) do.”
He capped the bit with a warning: “You know what happens if you don’t vote? You go to hell.”
The moment underscored a dynamic Republicans have wrestled with since Trump’s political rise a decade ago, argued Bradner: Even as the party tries to build a message and a bench beyond him — and even at an event explicitly designed to spotlight his heir apparent — Trump remains unable, or unwilling, to cede the spotlight for a single night.
Vance’s speech had leaned into personal stories about his wife, Usha, and their newborn son, along with a pointed exchange with a protester and an extended, racially charged feud with Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed.
It was, Bradner argued, a different register than Trump’s — more disciplined, more personal, less improvisational.
But the split-screen of the two speeches told its own story, the CNN reporter concluded: As Republicans used their two-day convention in Dallas to preview a future in which Vance, not Trump, leads the party, Trump showed up and made sure the cameras stayed on him.
