Former Republican strategist Steve Schmidt delivered a blistering assessment of President Donald Trump’s midterm convention, arguing that the Dallas gathering put the worst of MAGA on full display.
Schmidt tore into the spectacle during Thursday’s episode of “The Warning with Steve Schmidt,” calling it a “travesty” centered entirely on Trump.
“You have to understand that to appreciate both the depravity and the un-Americanness of the travesty in Dallas,” Schmidt said. “And it is a travesty.”
Schmidt played for viewers a clip of Trump promising Americans a $5,000 “Trump dividend” if Republicans keep control of Congress. Trump has not explained how the payments would work or where the money would come from.
The former GOP strategist said the convention showed how completely Trump has taken over the Republican Party.
“Cults of personality are always deadly,” Schmidt warned Thursday. “Always, there is a willingness by some to get on their knees to say anything to please a leader.”
Schmidt also went after Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), calling him a “disgrace” after playing part of his convention speech.
“Incredibly, compared to Darline Graham, he’s the smart one of the duo,” Schmidt added. He then described the GOP midterm event as a “Führer rally in Dallas for the fanatics.”
But Schmidt argued that Trump’s movement would eventually face investigations, subpoenas and accountability for the damage it has caused.
“The end is nigh for MAGA and this insanity,” he said. “All of it.”
