Republican’s staff snaps at ‘absurd’ report she scrubbed Trump off campaign site

As President Donald Trump’s approval rating continues to crater to record lows, one Republican lawmaker was spotted scrubbing their campaign website of references to the commander in chief, Politico reported Tuesday.

Incumbent Rep. Young Kim (R-CA) ran in a contested primary election against another incumbent GOP lawmaker, Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA), who switched districts after California redrew its congressional maps. California uses a top-two primary system, meaning the top-two performing candidates in a primary election, regardless of party, proceed to the November general election.

With Kim and Calvert now slated to compete again in November, Kim appeared to have altered her messaging campaign to California voters.

“Before the June primary, Kim’s campaign website called her a ‘Proven Fighter who will Stand with President Trump to deliver a bold America First Agenda’ and said she would provide ‘America First Leadership to Defend the American Dream,’ according to an archived version of the website,” Politico’s report reads.

“But Trump and ‘America First’ are now completely off of the home page and the banner now says she is ‘taking on Career Politicians to Restore the American Dream’ and ‘Fighting for the American Dream.’”

Kim’s bio on her campaign website now highlights Kim’s “priority” as working to “lower costs for working families,” and makes no mention of Trump or “America First.”

A spokesperson for Kim, Chris Pack, snapped at Politico when asked for comment, calling Politico’s suggestion — that Kim scrubbed her campaign website of references to Trump to distance herself from the president — “completely absurd.”

To push back against Politico’s reporting, Pack flagged a social media post from Kim in which she “wished Trump happy birthday,” as well as other social media posts where she referenced Trump Accounts, the president’s investment program for children.
