9 days after deadly Nepal floods, 2 men are rescued from tunnel

Two men have been rescued from inside a tunnel of a hydropower plant in Nepal, authorities said Friday, nine days after deadly flash floods ripped through the region.

The men were workers at the Trishuli 3 Hydropower Project, Nepal’s disaster management authority said on social media.

Video shared by Nepal’s army shows a man being hauled out of a tunnel by rescue workers to the sound of claps and cheers. The footage also showed a man being carried to higher ground and loaded onto a stretcher.

Nearly 1,300 people have been killed in Nepal and more than 5,000 people remain missing after floods swept through the area on Aug. 26, damaging homes, roads and bridges, according to the latest tally by Nepal’s Disaster Management authority. On the Tibet side of the border, 21 people have died and 541 remained missing as of Wednesday, Chinese state media reported.

About 900 workers from hydropower projects in Nepal remain missing, with about 500 believed to be trapped in tunnels, the Associated Press reported, citing local authorities. Rescue workers have paddled inflatable boats inside the tunnels to search for survivors.

Experts believe the deadly floodwaters that swept through Himalayan region were likely triggered by a landslide from a collapsing glacier.
