An anonymous account claiming to be former staffers for Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) drew widespread attention with a promise to publish their own stories and screenshots.
The account, posting under the name Former Fetterman Staffers, introduced itself on X on Friday and said its members had worked on the Pennsylvania Democrat’s campaign and in his Senate office.
Its first message pointed readers to a Wall Street Journal report published Thursday about Fetterman’s work habits in the Senate.
“We’re a group of former campaign & Senate staffers for John Fetterman who are disgusted with what he’s become,” the account wrote. “If you were troubled by yesterday’s Wall Street Journal story… trust us, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. It’s even worse than you thought.”
“We’ve come together to share our stories (and screenshots 
) to show Pennsylvanians exactly who their Senator is,” the account wrote in a second post. “Set your calendar for September 14th — the day the Senate is back in session — for our first drop. (Let’s be honest, maybe the 15th: he’ll skip Monday’s votes)”
The Senate has been out of session since early August and returns for business at 3 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 14, with one vote scheduled for 5:30 that evening, according to the Senate Daily Press Gallery.
The account does not identify any of its members, and its posts offer no way to confirm that the people behind it worked for the senator.
Journalists who cover Congress responded within the hour, according to timestamps on their posts.
“[I] have never seen anything like this before, “Sam Stein noted, managing editor of The Bulwark.
“This has gotta be a first,” Igor Bobic wrote, who covers the Senate for NOTUS.
Commentators outside the press corps followed through the early afternoon, according to their posts.
“Welcome to Twitter. Time to make some popcorn,” George Conway observed, the conservative attorney and longtime critic of President Donald Trump, who shared the account’s introduction.
“I’ve never smashed the follow button faster,” Democratic strategist Mike Nellis wrote.
Republicans and conservative writers focused instead on the anonymity of the people behind the account, according to their posts.
“I’m disgusted by anonymous leakers, actually,” Justice Department attorney Harmeet Dhillon warned.
“Gross, disgusting, and cowardly ableism,” conservative writer Stephen L. Miller complained.
Fetterman has been open about his struggles with severe depression and about a stroke he suffered during the 2022 campaign that has affected his speech.
“Seems Fetterman was right to dismiss these people,” Miller added in a second post.
The Journal’s report recounted multiple instances of Fetterman refusing to meet with constituents in Washington, even for scheduled meetings, and described him skirting committee hearings and considering skipping a police funeral in his home state, Politico reported.
In one case, Fetterman canceled on three paralyzed military veterans in his office and told his staff he was feeling unwell, the Journal reported. He came into the office shortly afterward to prepare for a live appearance on Fox News.
Democratic officeholders had already turned on Fetterman before the account appeared, and two Pennsylvania members of Congress condemned him in posts on X.
“John Fetterman is a disgrace,” Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-PA) wrote Thursday night. “Our state deserves better than a lazy trust fund baby who is too lazy to do the job.”
“There is a lot I could say about this report of John Fetterman’s pathetic behavior as a Senator,” Rep. Chris Deluzio (D-PA) wrote Friday morning. “But between the laziness, disrespect, and willingness to carry water for a foreign government … this man has no sense of duty. He is not up for the high office he was elected to — and we in Pennsylvania will do something about it in 2028.”
Fetterman won his seat in 2022 with the support of Pennsylvania’s progressive left and has since become one of Israel’s strongest supporters in the Senate, Politico reported. He met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago in January 2025, before Trump took office for a second term.
Fetterman’s office did not immediately respond to Politico’s request for comment. He has pushed back on earlier accounts from former staffers, telling CNN in May 2025 that he intended to serve out his term.
“It’s a one-source hit piece, and it involved maybe two or three and anonymous disgruntled staffers saying just absolute false things,” Fetterman said at the time.
