Hunt Underway After Deadly Shooting at Swiss Rave

The Swiss police are looking for one or more people who killed one woman and wounded five others at a rave in Switzerland on Sunday.

The shooting happened during a dance party at a horseracing track in Aarau, in the country’s north. A number of shots were fired, the police said, but on Sunday afternoon it was still unclear how many perpetrators and how many guns were involved.

A police spokesman said that they were searching the entire country but that the risk for people in the area was believed to be low since they thought the perpetrator or perpetrators had fled.

The shooting happened early Sunday as the rave was winding down, the spokesman said.

A 22-year-old woman died at the scene, and four men and a woman, aged 24 to 27, were wounded, according to the police. All six victims were Swiss citizens.

The army also dispatched a special forces unit to the scene and a helicopter to help in the manhunt.

Switzerland, which has a universal army draft, allows most men who have undergone basic training to keep their army weapons at home to help in domestic defense. However, most are not allowed to keep ammunition at home.

The shooting came nine months after a disaster in Crans-Montana, in the country’s south, left 41 people dead and dozens catastrophically burned when a fire erupted at a bar on New Year’s Eve.

On Sunday morning, the organizers of the rave released a statement on Instagram saying they were thinking of the victims, their friends and families.

“The cowardly attack on the guests at the Aarau rave has broken our hearts,” they wrote. “A rave should always be a place of joy and love.”
