Trump’s ‘paid slop’ plan immediately backfires as critics point to fatal flaw: ‘betrayal’

President Donald Trump’s newly announced plan to combat soaring beef prices sparked fears among critics Friday that it could end up backfiring on the very industry the plan appears designed to assist.

Beef prices have skyrocketed in recent months due in large part to a U.S. cattle shortage, a shortage exacerbated by a screwworm outbreak that some attribute to the Trump administration’s spending cuts.

As a stopgap measure, Trump announced that he had “concluded a deal” that would see 300,000 metric tons of foreign ground beef imported to the United States over a 90-day period, beef that would be “sold at 25% below current market prices” and be exempt from import tariffs. As argued by countless critics, however, the plan could very well hurt American beef producers, as well as pose serious health risks to American consumers.

“Trump undermines American Cattlemen again. The last time the US imported foreign beef, there was a huge contamination issue,” wrote Rep. Darren Soto (D-FL) Friday in a social media post on X. “Screwworm and mealybug outbreaks, rising diesel and fertilizer prices, and now this betrayal. The real solution is to promote increasing our herds.”

Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) called Trump’s plan “American beef LAST and foreign beef FIRST,” arguing that it would be impossible for American beef producers to compete with cheap imported beef sold below market value.

“Here is the paid slop about how the Trump admin is making it even harder for American beef ranchers and producers,” Greene wrote in response to Trump’s plan. “Now they will be undercut by foreign imported beef, as they have been hit financially with high cost of fertilizer and diesel from Trump’s war with Iran.”

And Brian Krassenstein, a prominent liberal influencer, sarcastically called Trump’s plan “brilliant” in a post on X to his nearly 1 million followers.

“So, in other words, in an effort to lower beef prices, Trump is going to flood the US market with possibly unsafe, foreign beef and drown out US cattle ranchers, causing even less American beef to be produced since they can’t make up their investment,” Krassenstein wrote.
