Republicans notch win in Missouri congressional redistricting fight

Missouri is on track to use a congressional map favored by Republicans, but the state Supreme Court may have the last word on it soon.

Republican state lawmakers last year redrew their congressional map at the behest of President Donald Trump to give themselves an advantage in another district, probably handing the party seven of the state’s eight seats.

The anti-gerrymandering group People Not Politicians submitted hundreds of thousands of signatures to place a measure on the ballot that would block the map until voters could decide whether they want to use it. Secretary of State Denny Hoskins (R) refused to accept their petitions, saying the state constitution didn’t allow ballot measures related to congressional redistricting.

Richard von Glahn, the leader of People Not Politicians, sued. A Cole County judge on Wednesday agreed with Hoskins and allowed the GOP-friendly map to be used in November. His decision also blocked the measure from appearing on the ballot.

The state Supreme Court accepted an appeal Thursday and said it would hold a hearing on it on Sept. 2. The ballot must be set by Sept. 8.
