Newly surfaced C-SPAN footage shows Sen. Mitch McConnell sitting almost completely motionless through a marathon overnight Senate vote just 10 days before he disappeared from public view entirely.
The footage, first flagged by independent journalist Desirée Townsend and reviewed by The Daily Beast, captures the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican “frozen in place” on June 4 during a 20-hour vote-a-rama on a $70 billion GOP bill funding Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol. While colleagues chatted and moved around him, McConnell sat beside an aide who frequently pushes him in a wheelchair, barely speaking and offering only feeble hand raises during votes.
Between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m., he remained almost entirely still, with no senators approaching him during the stretch.
Ten days later, McConnell was rushed from his home by ambulance and hospitalized for nearly two months. Since then, he hasn’t appeared in public or been filmed speaking, despite three statements attributed to him and two carefully staged “proof-of-life” photos showing him propped up in a hospital bed alongside wife Elaine Chao, in nearly identical poses.
One recent statement attributed to McConnell offered a vague update.
“I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home,” the statement read, thanking Kentuckians for their support.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat, says he’s gotten nothing more concrete, telling reporters he hasn’t spoken with McConnell directly despite repeated requests for transparency. A McConnell spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment on the new footage.
McConnell, one of the longest-serving senators in American history, has struggled publicly in recent years with multiple falls and several instances of freezing mid-sentence. His prolonged, unexplained absence leaves Senate Republicans without a reliable vote just as President Trump pushes to advance his legislative agenda through an already narrowly divided chamber.
