Republicans in the House and Senate are waiting for President Donald Trump to fork over desperately needed campaign cash as they threaten him with the specter of impeachment and he refuses to back “losers,” according to a new report.
A fraught battle under a ticking timeline could doom Republicans’ majority and Trump’s protection from congressional investigation as the president sullenly refuses to endorse the people who might protect him, CNN reported Saturday.
“He doesn’t want to carry dead carcasses across the finish line,” a source told CNN. “He’s not going to endorse a loser and ruin his brand.”
Yet Trump has also acknowledged that he might need those dead-carcass losers come 2027.
“The next two years will be f—ing horrible if we lose both chambers,” the source said. “And Trump knows that.”
That’s likely why, after weeks of begging from his party, Trump has finally agreed to cough up millions of dollars from his personal PAC to boost vulnerable Republicans in November, sources told CNN.
While one source said it could be as much as $30 million another cautioned the final number hasn’t been decided.
“There is a path where we keep the House and the Senate,” one source told CNN. “I’m not in a place today where I’m prepared to say we’re cautiously optimistic about that.”
Trump might also begin to stump for MAGA candidates — but insiders are quietly betting he’ll soon tire of it, sources said.
“He loves to travel, but he hates to travel,” said one of his advisers. “We’ll see how long that lasts.”
It remains unclear how much Trump can do for struggling candidates as his popularity plummets over mounting gas prices and the war in Iran, CNN noted.
“The GOP is fighting to hold dozens of House districts and a handful of critical Senate seats amid voter backlash over rising prices and the deeply unpopular war in Iran,” the report stated, “with no end in sight on either problem.”
