Fretting MAGA rep whines Congress ‘should do a little more’ for the rich

A Republican lawmaker commented that Congress could make more of an effort to help out wealthy Americans, The Independent reported on Friday.

Trump loyalist Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-WI) was speaking Thursday at a panel in Troy, Michigan, with other leaders when he made the remark, according to The Independent. The conversation turned to the president’s Big, Beautiful Bill and the needs of “the average guy,” when Grothman changed the direction.

“Don’t let anybody tell you that people running, uh, Congress right now are looking out for the rich,” he said. “Actually, I think we should do a little more for them, but, you know, right now, uh, we are doing all we can to help the middle class, right?”

Grothman will face off against Democratic challenger Brad Smith in November and is “no stranger to controversial public statements,” The Independent reported.

In May 2023, he complained that former President Joe Biden was not nominating enough straight “white guys” to be judges, according to The Independent.

In 2024, when Biden stepped out of the presidential election and Vice President Kamala Harris stepped into the Democratic campaign, he suggested that opposition voters felt “they have to stick with her because of her ethnic background.”

Grothman was criticized in May for saying ordinary people on food stamps shouldn’t be able to afford “top of the line foods.”

“That’s the next step of this,” Grothman said. “In our inner cities for far too long, lying, race-baiting, Democrat [sic] politicians have traded black Americans food stamps and subsidized rent for their souls.”
