Jackie, a beloved bald eagle who rose to fame via a live stream, has died. Fans watched her and her partner Shadow’s love story unfold atop a Jeffrey pine near Big Bear Lake. She was believed to be 14 years old.
“We know this news will be deeply felt by the many thousands of people around the world who have followed her journey,” reads a Facebook post from Ojai Raptor Center announcing her passing. “Our team is heartbroken. It has been an extraordinary privilege to care for her.”
Jackie had been receiving intensive care for a mysterious illness causing severe anemia. Her condition continued to deteriorate in recent days.
Jackie’s life in a nest in the San Bernardino mountains of California was like a soap opera witnessed worldwide. First there was her partner, Mr. B. They raised BBB (Big Bear Baby) and Stormy, before Shadow moved in and wouldn’t leave. Jackie and Shadow’s love story became an internet sensation. They raised numerous chicks, including hatchlings Sunny and Gizmo.
Last month, Jackie was attacked by two younger eagles. After she was found injured and unable to fly, she was transferred to the Ojai Raptor Center. Jackie received care there until she died Monday.
