Dope new data from state cannabis regulators show New Yorkers were sky-high during the Knicks championship runand also got lit watching FIFA’s World Cup games.
Sales of weed and other types of cannabis products jumped during 15 of the 19 total sports’ playoff games compared to other average daily sales this year, according to the Office of Cannabis Management.
In five of the games, the sales increases exceeded double digits.
Sales also surged by a staggering 30% during the Knicks championship parade along Broadway’s Canyon of Heroes on June 18.
“Knick fans were going crazy. My sales were up 20% during game days,” said Chris Kuilan, owner of Stoops NYC cannabis dispensary in Manhattan’s Flatiron District.
“They racked up to get ready for the game. They were buying gummies, pre-rolls and drinks. They had a double high.”
Cannabis sales soared 11% during the Knicks’ first home playoff game against the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday, April 18. The Knicks won, 113-102.
Sales of marijuana then rose an astonishing 95% for Game 2 on Monday, April 20, but that date is also a celebration of the unofficial 4/20 cannabis holiday.
State officials said the Knicks deserve an assist for boosting cannabis sales, even though they lost that game 107-106.
Earlier in the playoffs, in Game 2 of the Knicks’ series at home against the Cleveland Cavalierson Thursday, May 21, local cannabis sales jumped 14%. The Knicks won that game 109 to 93.
Fans were also baked for the first game of their finals against the Spurs in San Antonio on Wednesday June 3. Pot sales soared 12%, and the Knicks won 105 to 95.
New Yorkers were toasted for Game 3 on June 8, too, — the first championship home game at Madison Square Garden, when marijuana sales shot up 19%. The Knicks suffered their only loss to the Spursin the five-game series that day, 111 to 115.
Goals were meanwhile not only scored on the field during the World Cup soccer tournament.
Cannabis sales kicked up during the World Cup’s local quarterfinals, semifinals and championship, OCM’s analysis found.
During the Spain vs. Belgium quarterfinals game July 10, weed sales grew 10%. Spain won 2 to 1.
While the Spain vs. Argentina championship game played out July 19, cannabis sales shot up 18%. Spain won the championship match 1-0.
