House Democrats bracing for a possible return to power are quietly advancing a new strategy to “hold Trump accountable,” a senior Democratic aide told Reuters for its report published Saturday.
Senior House Democrats and committee aides are eyeing hearings, subpoenas and document requests aimed not at the White House itself, but at the companies and financial firms orbiting Trump’s world, a bet that Trump-linked businesses will prove easier to crack than a West Wing expected to stonewall oversight entirely.
“We’re not going into this to impeach,” the senior Democratic aide told Reuters, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “No one wants a failed vote on day one. The focus is on building a body of evidence through investigations that can hold Trump accountable.”
Names already surfacing in early discussions include Apple, Alphabet, Palantir, Blackstone, BlackRock and Elon Musk’s Tesla, according to Reuters, though sources say no formal probes have launched and no target list is final. Democrats are also eyeing Department of Homeland Security contracts, financing behind Trump’s planned White House ballroom, family business ties like 1789 Capital and foreign wealth funds invested in Trump-linked entities.
The groundwork is already underway, two inside sources told Reuters. Letters have gone out to Paramount Skydance, YouTube parent Alphabet, private prison operator GEO Group, security firm Salus Worldwide Solutions and commodity traders Vitol and Trafigura, seeking records that could pave the way for subpoenas down the line.
“From sketchy Pentagon contracts lining the pockets of the president’s sons, Trump’s crypto billions, and the shady backroom deals for Trump donors, we will ensure we combat corruption when Democrats take back the House in November,” Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) said in a statement to Reuters.
The White House insists it’s ready. An official told Reuters the administration is “prepared to respond to oversight requests, no matter who is in the House or Senate.”
