Trump vowed to break world record with fireworks show. Guinness says he did.

Trump vowed to break world record with fireworks show. Guinness says he did.

In the days leading up to last month’s Fourth of July celebration in D.C., President Donald Trump proclaimed on Truth Social that he would be launching “the LARGEST FIREWORKS SHOW IN HISTORY, right here in our Nation’s Capital.”

It appears he did, according to Guinness World Records. The internationally acclaimed compendium of achievements, oddities, random facts and obscure claims to fame announced the record on its website, stating: “The largest firework display consists of 840,537 fireworks, and was achieved by Pyrotechnico, Inc and Freedom250 (both USA) at an event organized by Event Strategies Inc in Washington D.C., USA, on 4 July 2026.”

Freedom 250 is the public-private partnership launched by the White House in December to produce events celebrating the country’s 250th birthday. It is separate from America 250, the bipartisan board created by Congress a decade ago to mark the nation’s semiquincentennial.

Late last month, the Trump administration asked Congress for an additional $10 million to cover costs related to Freedom 250 events, including a prayer event, the Great American State Fair and the fireworks show.

The rain-delayed Fourth of July fireworks in Washington began just a minute before midnight on one of the hottest days of the year and lasted about 40 minutes. A spokesperson for Pyrotecnico, the fireworks production company in charge of the show, told The Washington Post before the event that the detonation rate would be about “21,250 pyrotechnics per minute,” or about 355 per second. The original plan was for more than 850,000 fireworks.

Guinness confirmed the record-setting display in an email to The Post but did not explain how it tabulated the number of fireworks. The new total shatters the previous record achieved by a megachurch in the Philippines in 2016 when organizers launched just under 811,000 fireworks.

“No other president in history could have accomplished the incredible feat that President Trump did at our Nation’s historic 250th birthday celebration, which included an incredible air show, a record-breaking fireworks display, and an inspiring speech delivered before hundreds of thousands of American patriots,” White House spokesman Davis Ingle said in a statement. “This iconic day will forever stand as one of the most historic celebrations in American history and will never be forgotten by generations to come.”

While thousands on the National Mall found the lengthy fireworks show exhilarating, the display was not universally well-received.

People around the D.C. region sought prescriptions for antidepressant and anxiety-reducing drugs for their pets in advance of the display.

And air quality following the event reached unhealthy levels and remained there for about 12 hours after it ended, according to The Post’s review of data from AirNow, a website maintained by the Environmental Protection Agency that reports air quality measurements from physical sensors.
