Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) did not take kindly to a suggestion from MS NOW’s Peter Alexander that he should advise clearly ailing Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to step aside.
Appearing with Alexander to promote his book “How to Lose Friends and Antagonize Presidents,” the North Carolina Republican bristled and fell back on attacking President Joe Biden when asked about McConnell’s infirmities.
After Alexander noted that Tillis has long regarded McConnell as one of his mentors in the Senate, he asked, “Why wouldn’t his constituents be better served if Mitch McConnellstepped down and let someone else serve out these waning few months of his term?”
“I think it’s the same question that people ask of Biden,” Tillis parried.
”Understood,” the MS NOW host replied before persisting, “But Biden, he is no longer the president. Mitch McConnell still serves.”
When Tillis protested, Alexander challenged him with, “Well, why not lead by example? Then you could say, you know what? You were right. Biden should have. I think McConnell should too.”
“Guess what?“ Tillis argued. “We’re following the bad advice of people who mask the fact that President Biden was not prepared [for his debate].”
“Would you tell him I would recommend you step down, sir? You’re close to him. You could tell him that you’re the one who gets to give him advice in this equation,” Alexander continued.
“Mitch McConnell is retiring this year,“ Tillis shot back. “I ran into Mitch— the difference between the Biden situation, the Mitch situation is I’ve had conversations with Mitch. That man’s brain is as sharp as it ever is. His body is failing him because he’s had a lifelong struggle with polio.”
“Now people are telling me when I can have a coherent discussion with him,” he insisted. “I met with him a week or so, a couple of weeks ago: ‘Mitch, how are you doing?’ He spent probably less than 30 seconds talking about that, and he immediately jumped to, ‘What are we going to do to help Ukraine? What are we going to do to save the Senate and keep the filibuster?’ Does that sound like a man who’s not prepared to actually finish out his term?”
