President Donald Trump, in an interview with Punchbowl News, said he would “probably get along” well with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-New York) if he became House speaker next year.
Jeffries is likely to become the first Black House speaker in January if Democrats win back the House, which is currently controlled by Republicans.
Though Trump and Jeffries have officially met in person only once during an Oval Office meeting in September 2025, they have an adversarial relationship, with Jeffries often blaming the president for rising costs in the United States and ongoing war with Iran.
“He’s harsh because I’m harsh on him,” Trump said of Jeffries, acknowledging that he has said bad things about the New York Democrat.
When asked whether he could do business with Jeffries, Trump said, “I think so.”
“I’d probably get along with him very well,” Trump said.
Spokespeople for Jeffries did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
