President Donald Trump filed an emergency motion one day before a court-ordered deadline to block the release of his financial records to the BBC.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett ordered Trump to produce tax returns, ownership documents, and financial statements dating back to January 2023 from the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust, which controls approximately 400 business entities.
“Considering the Trust’s relationship to Plaintiff’s alleged damages,” Lett wrote, “the information the Trust possesses is relevant and material to any damages analysis…”
In December, Trump sued the BBC for $10 billion over its Jan. 6 coverage.
The president alleged the network edited his speech and intentionally omitted his call for supporters to march “peacefully and patriotically.”
Lett ruled the financial information was relevant because Trump claimed the broadcast harmed his brand and business values.
Trump’s lawyers initially sought damages for financial losses but later narrowed their claim to reputational harm only, yet Trump continues seeking $10 billion, according to reports.
The president asked BBC attorney Roy Altman to freeze Lett’s order pending appeal, characterizing the situation as a “true emergency.”
According to court filings, a trial is scheduled for February 2027.
