Woman, 36, collapsed, began turning blue during bar exam at Hofstra University — and proctors ordered test takers to keep working: lawsuit

An attorney hopeful lost consciousness and suffered a serious brain injury during the bar exam at Hofstra University, while proctors refused to stop the test and ignored her gasps for help, a shocking lawsuit claims.

Mary Jane Jung, of New Jersey, suddenly slumped out of her chair and allegedly went into cardiac arrest inside the Long Island school’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex shortly before a lunch break on July 30, 2025, during the morning session of the New York State Bar Examination, according to court papers filed in Nassau County.

The 36-year-old began “gasping for her air” on the floor, lost consciousness and started turning blue, while the exam’s proctors ordered the hundreds in the exam room to carry on with the test — delaying Jung critical “early minutes” during her alleged medical crisis, her lawsuit against the state and its Board of Law Examiners claims.

Those who tried to come to her aid were “discouraged or admonished,” July 29 court papers said.

“Emergency medical services were not immediately summoned. CPR was not promptly administered. AED equipment … was not deployed during the critical early minutes. “The consequences were devastating.”

Only after the exam ended were emergency responders allowed to treat Jung, according to the court filing.

Hofstra countered that its public safety officers immediately provided CPR and other life-saving measures until paramedics arrived and rushed Jung to nearby Nassau University Medical Center.

The alleged delay allowed Jung’s heart to stop pumping blood which led to a brain injury and required doctors to eventually implant a defibrillator in her chest, court papers said.

“We hope to see accountability through this lawsuit, and bring some closure of a traumatic and painful experience for our client,” Jung’s attorney, Imran H. Ansari, told Newsday.

“More importantly, Ms. Jung’s ordeal will resonate and effectuate change in the manner the test is administered and how those who host the test takers accommodate their needs, particularly in the event of a medical emergency.”

Carmen Beauchump Ciparick, a former judge and current chairperson of the Board of Law Examiners — the group responsible for administering the bar exam — said the university responded to Jung’s emergency within two and a half minutes of her collapsing out of her chair, and three and a half minutes before lunch break.

Jung, a graduate of Fordham Law School, is seeking undisclosed financial damages.

Hofstra University and the state Board of Law Examiners did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
