Ariana Grande addresses her decision to step back from public life

After singer Ariana Grande announced that she was stepping away from the upcoming musical “Sunday in the Park With George” and that she plans to take a public break after her Eternal Sunshine Tour, she addressed the decision during her concert in Chicago on Monday night.

Reading from her phone onstage, Grande said the decision had been made well in advance.

“So, basically, the announcement that was made yesterday was not a reactive or impulsive thing,” she said. “It is something that I have decided; it’s a plan that I had quietly made a long time ago.”

Grande shared that her decision came from a place of empowerment and was not influenced by “negativity” online, regardless of what her fans thought.

She said that she was taking a break while also enjoying her career and that multiple things can be true at once. She shared that she was setting healthy boundaries and called this chapter of her career “the greatest experience.” She described the tour as “healing” and “beautiful.”

Grande told her fans that she wanted to clear up any misinformation and rumors that could have been “blown out of proportion.

As her fans erupted in cheers, she added: “No matter what noises exist out there, nothing will ever be able to distort my reality or be more real to me or louder to me than this love that we share in this room.”

Grande has two more U.S. stops on her tour, both in Chicago. It concludes at the O2 in London on Sept. 1.
