Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) long served as Ukraine’s most reliable ally inside Donald Trump’s circle, working to keep American support for Kyiv alive even as skepticism grew within the president’s base.
But his sudden death from an aortic dissection on July 11 — one day after meeting Volodymyr Zelensky in Ukraine — left that role vacant at a pivotal moment in the war, and the person who filled it was not a foreign policy hawk or a Reagan-era Republican, but Laura Loomer, a blogger known for combative online campaigns rather than diplomacy, reported the Washington Post.
Loomer landed in Kyiv on July 19 intending only to see the country for herself, but 10 days later she returned to the U.S. having interviewed Zelensky at length, visited the frontline city of Kharkiv, and pressed Ukrainian officials on how they communicate with American audiences.
The shift marked a dramatic break from her earlier positions. Last September, she publicly accused Zelensky’s government of tolerating extremism after he met Syria’s president. By late July, she was warning that Russian influence campaigns — not Ukraine — posed the real threat to American conservatives, pointing to a June gathering in Russia attended by other right-wing figures as evidence of Kremlin outreach.
Ukrainian officials appear to have anticipated an opening. Ambassador Olha Stefanishyna described a long-running effort to reach MAGA-aligned voices regardless of their starting position on the war, and said she suggested Loomer’s visit to a bombed Kyiv McDonald’s personally. She said Zelensky reacted warmly to the resulting interview.
Loomer’s new argument leans on “America First” logic, saying Ukraine offers practical value to the U.S., including expertise countering Iranian-made drones, and she argues Russia’s ambitions for a multipolar world threaten American influence abroad.
Her emergence comes as Trump’s own posture has softened, with the president recently voicing comfort with Ukrainian strikes inside Russia and discussing missile-defense technology sharing. He has amplified Loomer’s Zelensky interview and is expected to meet with her to discuss the trip.
