Bezos’ WaPo in turmoil as top editor abruptly departs after ‘total embarrassment’

Billionaire Jeff Bezos’ Washington Post is reeling after the departure of Opinion Editor Adam O’Neal, who abruptly left his job last week, catching his staff by surprise.

According to a report from media watchdog Status, it was just more than one year ago that O’Neal was brought on board to change the focus of the editorial page from overwhelmingly liberal to align more with the billionaire owner’s “free markets” beliefs.

As Status reports, it did not go well.

O’Neal had projected confidence about his tenure, telling confidants last year he expected to remain at the Bezos-owned publication for decades, and describing the role as likely his “final position in journalism.”

That prediction collapsed Friday when O’Neal announced his departure. According to Status, during an 11:30 a.m. all-hands meeting, he told Opinion staffers he was leaving for personal family reasons. The explanation caught staff off-guard, given his previously expressed commitment to the role.

O’Neal’s 18-month tenure was marked by aggressive restructuring. He oversaw layoffs, “recruited conservative voices, expanded video content,” and repositioned the Opinion section toward a more overtly contrarian identity — moves that repeatedly drew internal backlash and led to subscription cancellations.

According to Status, his video initiative became particularly problematic. The Post invested $80,000 in studio equipment for the opinion section’s “Make It Make Sense” podcast. The investment occurred shortly after February layoffs decimated newsroom ranks, creating internal friction over resource allocation.

The video channel has attracted only approximately 1,600 YouTube subscribers since launch. Newsroom employees questioned the strategy of producing culture-war programming within an already saturated conservative media ecosystem. One staffer described the project as “a total embarrassment.”

O’Neal’s abrupt departure leaves the Opinion section uncertain about its direction, Status is reporting.
