Another Los Angeles water pipe rupture wreaks havoc on Beverly Grove

Crews were sent to a ritzy Los Angeles neighborhood to respond to water rushing through the streets due to a broken pipe, prompting officials to shut off water service while repairs were underway.

It’s one of the latest flooding incidentslinked to water infrastructure failures across Los Angeles.

The flooding happened in the Beverly Grove neighborhood near the intersection of San Vicente Boulevard and Lyndenhurst Avenue.

Footage from the scene showed water flowing across the roadway and into storm drains.

Crews were dispatched to repair the broken pipe, though the full extent of the damage was not immediately known. LADWP first reported the flooding around 4:48 a.m.

No injuries were reported, and it was not immediately clear what caused the pipe to break.

KTLA’s coverageof the incident showed workers at the scene as water continued to drain down the street, resembling other flooding incidents that have occurred across the greater Los Angeles area.

A nearby resident who spoke with KTLA and recorded the flooding said they discovered the water while taking out the trash Sunday morning and was concerned it could affect cars in the area if the storm drains became clogged.

Leah McKenzie, a spokesperson for LADWP, said that as of 2:10 p.m. Sunday crews were still on-site making repairs to the water main break. She said the affected pipe was an 8inch cast iron pipe and 10 services are currently affected.

San Vicente Blvd. is closed between Lindenhurst Ave. and Orlando Ave. Crews estimated time of restoration is 2:30 p.m. this afternoon.

The cause of this water main break is still under investigation, according to McKenzie.

The flooding comes after a series of other significant water infrastructure failures across Los Angeles in recent weeks, including a major July 16 water main rupture in West Hollywood that released an estimated 17 million gallons of water.

The break damaged businesses and homes and opened a large sinkhole along Sunset Boulevard.

LADWP crews have also responded to several additional pipe breaks, including a smaller rupture in West Hollywood days later and another water main break in Jefferson Park last weekend.

The utility said that Los Angeles experiences two to four water main breaks each day and that its systemwide leak rate remains lower than the national average.

McKenzie added that the utility had tripled their mainline replacement over the last 20 years.
