President Donald Trump’s miscalculations of an opponent are now dragging an unsuspecting family member into a lawsuit, per a legal expert.
During an episode of the Legal AF podcast, Michael Popok explained that the BBC offered an apology to Trump as a way to resolve a $10 billion defamation lawsuit. After Trump refused, the BBC sent out dozens of subpoenas, with one possibly reaching his youngest son, Barron Trump.
“Attention, Barron Trump, you may be coming in to testify in a court of law,” Popok said. “Donald Trump is not only a loser but a frequent miscalculator of the conduct of people on the other side. You can sue who you want, but you can’t dictate how they’re going to defend the case.”
Trump sued the BBC for $10 billion over its edited clip of his January 6 speech, where he told people to fight. The BBC is trying to prove that Trump was, in fact, involved in the January 6 insurrection, so the BBC has issued subpoenas to inner-circle figures and everyone who was with Trump in the days before January 6.
“They have subpoenaed people like Don Jr. and Roger Stone and everybody that was in the Willard Hotel war room to plan Jan 6,” Popok said, referring to the Willard InterContinental where Trump’s allies were headquartered before January 6. “Barron Trump’s even been mentioned.”
Popok said that Trump must have been thinking, “Well, the BBC apologized to me for editing my own words” and expecting, “They’re going to settle, and I’m going to get a big check.” That turned out to not be the case.
“He miscalculated because once the BBC said, ‘All right, he’s not taking the apology,’” Popok said. “They were like, ‘All right, start throwing bombs and haymakers in the lawsuit to defend us.’”
