President Donald Trump is publicly minimizing his frustrations with Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), according to a new report.
Previously, the president has privately characterized Thune as “one of my biggest headaches,” according to Atlantic reporter Jonathan Lemire.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt recently said the president’s “patience is running out” with Thune, as Trump publicly urged supporters to pressure the senator to pass the SAVE America Act, a stalled voting rights bill requiring proof of citizenship.
However, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, his relationship with Thune is “fine.” Axios also reported Thune plans to attend Trump’s midterm GOP convention in Dallas.
Trump’s frustration stems from Thune’s refusal to eliminate the Senate filibuster to pass the SAVE Act.
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson emphasized the legislation “has always been a top priority for President Trump” and that Trump “will not stop fighting until it is passed.”‘
