ICE deported man to two separate countries — both in violation of court orders

The Trump administration’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement has now violated two separate court orders in its quest to get one man deported.

The detainee, Nelson Ariel Umanzor Chavez, was sent to two different countries, each time illegally.

Umanzor Chavez was initially deported to Mexico, despite a court order in effect prohibiting his removal to that specific country. As flagged by Politico’s Kyle Cheney on X, the court noted in a document from that case that “On November 13, 2025, the Respondents removed the Petitioner to Mexico. On November 14, 2025, Petitioner’s counsel informed the Court of Petitioner’s removal. The Court held a hearing on the matter on the same day, in which Respondents’ counsel confirmed that Petitioner was mistakenly removed to Mexico and Respondents have initiated efforts to facilitate his return to the United States.”

According to court documents flagged by Cheney, he was then deported to El Salvador — despite it being prohibited by “court-ordered torture protection.”

“In January 2026, Respondents removed Petitioner to El Salvador, in violation of the immigration’s judge’s order granting Petitioner withholding of removal to that country,” said the document. “In May, Petitioner informed the Court that Salvadoran authorities had immediately imprisoned him upon his arrival in El Salvador … Salvadoran authorities have transferred Petitioner between prisons and his family has not been provided information regarding his current location, his condition, or whether he is alive.”

The document further noted that Umanzor Chavez “has spoken with his wife only once” since being shipped to El Salvador, and “his family has hired two Salvadoran attorneys to locate [him], but so far to no avail.”

The Trump administration’s disregard of court orders in deportation cases exploded into the national conversation last year with the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a family man living in Maryland who was shipped to El Salvador’s infamous CECOT megaprison in violation of court orders, sparking months of controversy until he could be returned.
