Smoke from wildfires raging in Canada choked much of the northeastern United States and the Upper Midwest on Thursday, darkening skies and making it unhealthy, or even hazardous, for millions of people to breathe.
Thick haze shrouded cityscapes, casting gloom over daily life, and officials warned residents to avoid spending time outdoors.
Conditions were expected to improve in the Northeast by Friday, though the smoke and heat were expected to linger in the Upper Midwest through the weekend.
