  • OpenAI launched the Codex Micro, a shortcut keyboard for users of its AI coding product.
  • The keyboard is engineered by Work Louder and priced at $230.
  • Codex Micro gives vibe-coders keys for agent-switching, a reasoning dial, and a voice recording key.

OpenAI is bringing your AI agent to your fingertips, literally.

The AI lab’s first hardware product has officially arrived. Codex Micro is a mini keyboard built for power users of OpenAI’s coding product. The device is engineered by Work Louder, a Canadian-Italian producer of keyboards and other accessories.

No, this isn’t the fabled Jony Ive collaboration that’s in the works. (OpenAI’s CFO said that would revealed by the end of the year.) Rather, this device is a boon for AI coders — and a signal for where OpenAI is placing its bets.

Introducing the Codex Micro

For $230, Codex users can make vibe coding even easier — and more tactile.

The Codex Micro includes six light-up keys that show an agent’s status. For those into multi-agent orchestrations, the keys also allow users to seamlessly jump between agents. There’s a joystick for navigation and a dial for adjusting the agent’s reasoning level.

The keyboard also has a customizable set of shortcut keys for common Codex actions. That includes a voice recorder for those who send audio prompts to their agents.

Work Louder produces several mechanical keyboards. As such, the Codex Micro comes in two options for the mechanical keys: “clicky” and “silent.”

Codex on the rise

As OpenAI continues its quest to cut down on “side quests,” AI coding has grown into a key priority.

The company has bet big on Codex, including expensive advertising campaigns and offering free usage perks. Last week, the company merged Codex into the ChatGPT desktop app.

Codex and ChatGPT Work have reached 8 million active users, per Thibault Sottiaux, Codex’s engineering lead.

The Micro is yet another sign: OpenAI is all in on Codex.
