President Donald Trump claimed the crowd was incredible at the Great American State Fair kickoff rally Wednesday night held in the National Mall.
He continued on Truth Social, “At least 45,000 people were there, with a huge Television and online audience.”
However, independent media estimates contradict his claims.
NBC News estimated attendance at “more than 1,000,” while the Washington Post reported the crowd “thinly covered an area about the length of the National Museum of American History, smaller than some summer outdoor movie screenings.”
Video footage shows a steady stream of people walking away during Trump’s speech.
The event’s kickoff was marred by several musical acts withdrawing due to concerns about its political nature. Trump’s remarks touted Washington, D.C., infrastructure improvements and compared his political movement to the American Revolution.
The attendance discrepancy echoes previous disputes between Trump and media outlets over crowd sizes at his public events.
