GOP candidate for pivotal Senate seat blurts admission about Trump’s war

Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA), the presumptive Republican nominee for Iowa’s critical US Senate race, has acknowledged that Donald Trump’s unpopular Iran war threatens her electoral prospects — a candid admission captured on audio and reported by Politico.

During a one-on-one conversation with voters at a public meet-and-greet in Webster County last Thursday, Hinson expressed hope that the conflict would end quickly, warning that prolonged fighting could damage her campaign.

“I do hope we can get this done by the next couple of weeks. If it drags on beyond that, it’s a political liability for us too, because we’ve lost Iowa soldiers. I’ve been to four funerals since December, it’s awful,” Hinson said, according to audio obtained by Politico.

When asked about a timeline for ending the war, Hinson stated, “I’m deferring to the president on the negotiations because he has the team doing it,” she said.

The admission represents a striking departure from Hinson’s public positioning as an unwavering Trump ally on Capitol Hill. She has consistently voted against limiting the president’s military powers and has backed his military interventions.

The candid remarks offer a window into mounting Republican anxiety about the Iran conflict’s political consequences. Rising gas prices and the prospect of increased American casualties threaten to undermine GOP messaging in battleground contests heading toward November, Politico is reporting.

A Hinson campaign spokesperson quickly attempted to minimize the comments in a statement: “Of course endless wars are unpopular — no one wants them and thankfully President Trump is doing everything he can to prevent one while keeping Americans safe. Ashley fully supports his mission to keep nuclear weapons out of Iran’s hands.”

Hinson is widely expected to win Tuesday’s GOP primary for Iowa’s open Senate seat vacated by Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA). She will face the Democratic nominee — either state Sen. Zach Wahls or state Rep. Josh Turek — in November in what is shaping up as one of the nation’s most closely watched Senate races, according to the report.

Trump endorsed Hinson’s Senate bid last year and reinforced that support in a Truth Social post Monday night. Early polling shows a tight general election matchup, though dynamics could shift between now and November.
