FBI Director Kash Patel fired Deputy Assistant Director Emily Morales last Friday, escorting her out by security in what FBI sources describe as part of an ongoing politically motivated purge of nonpartisan agents who drew disfavor from President Donald Trump and Republicans.
Morales’ apparent offense was her involvement in investigating James Hodgkinson, who opened fire on a Republican congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia in June 14, 2017, according to reporting by MS NOW.
The core dispute centers on how the FBI characterized the attack. An FBI report labeled it “suicide by cop” while a GOP House committee insisted it was a “premeditated assassination attempt” by a “radical, left-wing political extremist.”
MS NOW’s Ken Dilanian reported the firing is impacting the FBI’s morale, with employees uncertain what actions might trigger their removal. Current FBI employees are either retiring or keeping their heads down to preserve their jobs.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche has also boasted about firing agents involved in Trump investigations.
