Police Investigating Former Prince Andrew Consider Reports of Sexual Claim

The police in Britain said on Friday that they were continuing their investigation into Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the former Prince Andrew, and said they were assessing reports that a woman had been taken to an address in Windsor in 2010 for sexual purposes.

Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor, the king’s brother, was arrested in February as part of an investigation into misconduct in public office over his ties to Jeffrey Epstein, the financier and convicted sex offender who died in 2019.

Revelations about that connection led to a stunning fall from grace for the former prince that saw him stripped of his royal titles and kicked out of his longtime home, Royal Lodge in Windsor.

The arrest in February followed accusations that Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor had shared confidential documents with Mr. Epstein while serving as a British trade envoy.

Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor has denied wrongdoing and has not been charged with a crime. A representative for him did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday.

The Thames Valley Police, the police force overseeing the investigation into the former prince, did not name him in the statement, as is standard procedure in Britain, but shared details that made clear the investigation related to Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor.

In their statement, the police said: “In addition to the investigation into misconduct in public office, the assessment of reports that a woman was taken to an address in Windsor in 2010 for sexual purposes is ongoing.”

The police said they had “engaged with the woman’s legal representative to confirm that, should she wish to report this to police, it will be taken seriously and handled with care, sensitivity and respect for her privacy and her lifelong right to anonymity under U.K. law.”

Virginia Giuffre, who was the first victim of Mr. Epstein to waive her right to anonymity, told the Metropolitan Police in 2015 that Mr. Epstein and his longtime accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell, had trafficked her to London in 2001 and forced her to have sex with Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor when she was 17 years old. Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing in relation to Ms. Giuffre, who died by suicide in 2025.

The police statement on Friday comes a day after the release of documents relating to Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor’s appointment as a trade envoy, an official post he held between 2001 and 2011. This is the role concerned in the investigation into potential misconduct in public office.

The police said they were working with the U.S. Justice Department as part of the investigation.

“Our misconduct in public office investigation is continuing. Misconduct in public office is a crime that can take different forms, making this a complex investigation,” Oliver Wright, an assistant chief constable of Thames Valley Police, said in a statement.

The statement said that Thames Valley Police was working with other forces on a “national policing response to the Epstein Files,” including by contacting victims and survivors, and encouraged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
