‘Lost his seat, found his voice’: Eyes widen as Bill Cassidy flips on Trump’s war

Trump-backed candidate advances past GOP enemy – who’s still clinging to his seat

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) is on his way out after President Donald Trump worked to get him defeated in his own primary — but he’s signaling defiance on the way out the door, voting alongside Democrats on Tuesday night to advance a resolution limiting the president’s powers to wage war in Iran.

The move, which comes as Democrats are introducing such measures every week, caused a stir among commenters on social media — many of whom weren’t quick to view Cassidy as an anti-Trump hero just yet, but who nonetheless noticed the senator’s newfound incentives against the leader of his party.

“Too little, too late,” wrote Zeteo News chief Mehdi Hasan on X.

“As Kris Kristofferson once wrote and Janis Joplin once sang: Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose,” wrote Eric Michael Garcia of The Independent.

“Bill Cassidy *votes yes* on Dems’ war powers measure, giving them four Republicans supporting so far,” wrote Connor O’Brien, a defense reporter for Politico. “He’s been on YOLO watch since he lost his primary over the weekend.”

“Cassidy, now officially a free agent, bucks the president,” wrote Punchbowl News founder Jake Sherman.

“Now officially a member of the YOLO caucus,” wrote NOTUS’ Igor Bobic.

“Lost his seat, found his voice,” wrote former Politico reporter turned podcaster Rachel Bade.
