President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice has abandoned its review of a MAGA congressman’s phone related to his campaign finances, according to a new report.
Politico’s Kyle Cheney reported on Tuesday that the Trump DOJ stopped its review of Rep. Andy Ogles’ (R-TN) phone, which was confiscated in March 2024 as part of the federal investigation. Ogles said the FBI and the Federal Election Commission were investigating “mistakes” that his campaign made in their initial campaign finance filings.
“In discussions with the Office of the Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division of the United States Department of Justice, the Government has advised defense counsel that it will promptly return or destroy the property and information obtained pursuant to the respective search warrants at issue,” according to a court order announcing the move. “The emergency motions filed by Congressman Ogles in these matters are therefore moot.”
Ogles, a first-term congressman from Tennessee, was elected in 2023 with Trump’s endorsement.
The move sparked outrage among political analysts and observers.
“Disgusting,” Norman Ornstein, a political scientist, posted on X.
“WTAF is wrong with MAGA that they’re perfectly okay with full-on criminals as long as they wear red hats?” Heidi Campbell, a Democratic state senator in Tennessee, posted on X.
“Republicans are corrupt and evil,” political commentator Linda Stevens posted on X.
