President Donald Trump criticized FDA Commissioner Marty Makary during weekend calls and on Monday White House meetings over his inability to move “quickly enough” on approving flavored vaping products for retail sale.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Trump sought advice from advisers about Makary, emphasizing the importance of flavored vaping to young MAGA voters.
Administration officials characterized Makary as blocking Trump’s vaping agenda and described him as a problem for the administration.
Earlier this year, the Trump administration pushed to expand flavored vape availability, but Makary’s office issued a memo preventing authorization of several flavors. Makary is now “on thin ice with his superiors,” according to sources.
The Journal reported that Trump and Makary discussed the FDA commissioner potentially changing course on flavored vapes, though it remains unclear whether Makary has decided to do so.
